SHAH ALAM: The success of taekwondo athletes in contributing two gold medals to the Sarawak SUKMA XXII contingent yesterday serves as a boost to athletes in other sports to maintain the same stellar momentum.

Chef de Mission for the Sarawak Contingent Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu is optimistic that Sarawak's gold medal count will increase through several other sporting events with the potential to contribute to the state contingent.

“Indeed, our plan today is to secure gold medals; thank you to taekwondo and other sports that have also contributed medals.
“This is natural in sports. But for tomorrow, there are many more events offering gold medals.

“I believe we will be able to win several more events,” he stated.

He said this when met by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) during the Opening Ceremony of the SUKMA XXII and Para SUKMA Selangor 2026 at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam on Saturday.

The opening ceremony was officiated by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.

Thus far, the Sarawak contingent has successfully secured two gold medals and three bronzes to stand in seventh place overall.

The taekwondo event aims to add another gold medal for Sarawak through 2024 gold medalist Pretty Amisha Amanda, who will compete in the heavyweight category.

Attention will also be directed towards the athletics events, which kick off their competition today, with several categories holding potential to contribute medals to Sarawak. — UKASnews
