KUCHING: Companies in Sarawak are encouraged to take advantage of SIRIM's standards and certification as a platform to penetrate larger markets and seize high-value opportunities, especially in the energy sector.

Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy Berhad and PETROS) Datuk Ibrahim Baki said standards and certification are crucial in facilitating local companies to prove their level of quality, reliability and compliance to customers and business partners.

According to him, the matter is particularly relevant as Sarawak's industry continues to grow and is increasingly involved in the regional and global supply chain.

"The Sarawak Government's priority is not only to create new industry opportunities, but to ensure that local companies are equipped with the necessary systems, skills and technical capabilities to meet the needs of the market," he said.

He said this while speaking at the SIRIM Updates & Networking Session 2026 which took place at a hotel here, on Tuesday.

In the meantime, he said there is great potential to increase the participation of local companies in the domestic and global supply chain.

He explained that the effort requires continuous focus on technical capabilities, quality management and the ability to meet the needs of key clients.

"Going forward, we want to see more Sarawak companies using standards and certification as a way to access larger markets and higher value opportunities, especially in the energy sector," he said.

At the same event, Datuk Ibrahim also presented the ISO 29001 Quality Management Systems for Petroleum, Petrochemical and Natural Gas Industries certificate as well as a certificate under the SIRIM Product Certification Scheme to the successful recipients.

In this regard, he encouraged industry players to take advantage of SIRIM's expertise as well as engagement sessions such as SIRIM Updates & Networking Session to understand new requirements and strengthen their respective areas of capability.

He also expressed hope that the achievement of the recipient of ISO 29001 certification could act as a catalyst for more Sarawak companies to strengthen their capabilities and explore new opportunities in the wider market.
