KUCHING: The Miss Sarawak Tourism pageant serves not only as a platform to crown a beauty queen, but also plays a role in strengthening the promotion of the state’s tourism and creative industries on a wider stage.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan said such a programme could serve as a strategic medium to showcase Sarawak’s unique culture, heritage and tourism products to a wider audience.

“The participation of contestants from diverse backgrounds also helps promote Sarawak’s ethnic diversity and identity as a tourism destination rich in cultural heritage,” he said.

He said this when officiating at Miss Sarawak Tourism at The Spring Mall, here on Monday.

The event also saw the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP) and strategic partners involved in Miss Sarawak Tourism, aimed at strengthening collaboration in promoting the state’s tourism and creative economy.

Datuk Snowdan added that the collaboration is expected to open up more opportunities for local talent to be involved in the tourism, performing arts and creative industries sectors, thus contributing to the state's economic development.

Programmes like this, he said, were also in line with the Sarawak Government's aspirations to make the tourism sector one of the main drivers of economic growth, while also strengthening the state's identity on the international stage. -UKASnews
