MIRI: Some 4,694 students have benefited from the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) as of 4 May 2026, reflecting the state government’s continued commitment to expanding access to education for the younger generation.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said education is a long-term investment capable of providing lifelong benefits to the youths.

He said providing quality education and learning opportunities is far more meaningful in building children’s future than financial assistance alone.

“Education is very important. When we provide our children with education and knowledge, the benefits will stay with them throughout their lives,” he said.

He said this when speaking at the Media Appreciation Night and Education Incentives for Members' Children 2026 organised by the Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) at a hotel here on Monday.

The Piasau Assemblyman added that the number of recipients benefiting from FTES is expected to increase following the release of the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) results.

He said the development reflects the Sarawak Government's continued efforts to expand education opportunities for Sarawakians.

At the same time, Datuk Sebastian reminded parents to play an active role in ensuring their children take advantage of the opportunities provided, in addition to providing attention, love and support throughout the studying process.
