KUCHING: The cultural heritage of the Bisaya community must continue to be preserved and leveraged as an important asset to ensure that this cultural identity and treasure remain inherited by future generations.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said Sarawak’s strength lies not only in economic development and technological progress, but is also anchored in the cultural diversity and identity of its people.
According to him, the Bisaya community must view cultural heritage not merely as a legacy of past generations, but as an asset for future generations—such as the dances, music, attire, food, language, customs, and traditions of the Bisaya people, which form part of the treasures that make Sarawak so unique.
“In this regard, I want to see the younger generation play an even greater role.
“Utilise social media, digital technology, and new creativity to introduce Bisaya culture to the world. We want our culture to remain alive, continue growing, and stay relevant without losing its original values and identity,” he said.
He said this in a text speech read by the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, at the Badudun Badapun 2026 Ceremony held at the UNIFOR Complex here on Saturday.
In the meantime, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari noted that the Sarawak Bisaya Association plays a vital role as a bridge between generations, serving not only as a gathering place but also as a platform to develop talent, leadership, entrepreneurship, and professional networks within the Bisaya community.
Therefore, he expressed hope that the Badudun Badapun Ceremony can be continued as an annual event with more diverse and engaging programs.
He explained that the event serves not only as a space to celebrate culture, but also as a platform to highlight the talents of Bisaya youth, showcase local entrepreneurs, and strengthen intergenerational ties. — UKASnews
