Murum Assemblyman Urges Swift Formation Of Special Committee On Bakun Legacy Issues
KUCHING: A special committee to address development legacy issues in the Bakun resettlement, particularly those involving the community at the Sungai Asap Resettlement Scheme (BRS) and native customary rights (NCR) land, should be set up without delay to ensure a comprehensive and lasting solution.
Murum Assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon said the committee was crucial for examining the various outstanding issues and finding fair solutions in the interest of the affected communities.
He said the proposal to form a special committee, or task force, was suggested by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg during a meeting with community representatives on February 25, 2026.
"However, the committee has yet to be formed, even though a follow-up meeting has been held.
"Therefore, I urge that the formation of this special committee be expedited, with the involvement of ministries, relevant agencies and community representatives," he said.
He said this when debating the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026 at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Wednesday.
Kennedy said the special committee must be given a clear mandate so that each outstanding issue could be examined in detail before a fair, comprehensive and lasting solution was put forward.
He stressed that the effort was not aimed at finding fault with any party, but at ensuring that the development legacy issues still faced by the community were addressed responsibly and prudently.
"I am confident that with close cooperation between the Sarawak Government leadership, relevant agencies and community representatives, a definitive solution can be worked out for the benefit of the people," he added. -UKASnews
