Align Sibu SEZ's Development With Bukit Assek Redevelopment Project
KUCHING: The Bukit Assek Redevelopment Project should be aligned with the development of the Sibu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to stimulate the town's economic growth, attract new investments, and generate quality employment opportunities.
Bukit Assek Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek called on the Federal Government to consider targeted tax incentives for eligible investors implementing redevelopment and commercial projects in Bukit Assek.
According to him, measures such as investment tax allowances or tax exemptions for a specified period could encourage private sector investment in modern commercial premises, business facilities, and other economic activities capable of creating high-quality jobs.
“By aligning federal fiscal incentives with Sarawak's urban redevelopment plan, we can revitalize Sibu’s town center, attract new businesses, and build a more appealing environment for investors, professionals, and residents,” he said.
He said this while debating the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026 at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Wednesday.
Elaborating further, Joseph explained that the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Project, spanning an area of 820 acres, is not merely an urban renewal initiative, but a key component of Sibu's comprehensive economic transformation.
He clarified that the project's master plan received final approval from the State Planning Authority (SPA) on January 28, 2026, featuring integrated planning that encompasses flood mitigation, drainage systems, transportation, housing, commercial development, and green spaces to build a more sustainable and livable urban environment.
He urged the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA) to maintain public engagement sessions and consider establishing a permanent exhibition space so that residents and landowners can obtain updated information and submit feedback.
He added that providing affordable resettlement housing, ensuring fair treatment for affected landowners, and safeguarding community interests must remain top priorities throughout the project's implementation.
As the redevelopment is anticipated to span at least 15 years, he stressed that the government must establish clear implementation phases and timelines, particularly regarding urgent infrastructure upgrades and flood mitigation measures. — UKASnews
