RM120 Million Fourth Sibu Flood Mitigation Project Needs To Be Expedited
KUCHING: The execution of the Fourth Sibu Flood Mitigation Project, valued at RM120 million, must be expedited to mitigate flood risks and protect residents' homes, businesses, and livelihoods, including in the Bukit Assek area.
Bukit Assek Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek said that the project is expected to safeguard approximately 618 hectares of land, thereby helping to address long-standing flooding issues faced by Sibu residents.
“I urge the relevant authorities to accelerate its implementation and hope that the tendering process can be carried out in the near future, as effective flood mitigation efforts are crucial for protecting homes, businesses, and livelihoods,” he said.
He said this while debating the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026 at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Wednesday.
In an effort to enhance flood mitigation efficacy, he also advocated for Phase Two of the Sentosa Flood Mitigation Project and the flood mitigation project in Kampung Saujana to improve drainage systems and reduce flood risks for affected communities.
It is understood that Phase One of the Sentosa Flood Mitigation Project, involving an allocation of RM21.38 million, has been completed.
Meanwhile, Joseph also proposed the construction of a new link road connecting the Jalan Aman Roundabout to Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.
He explained that the proposed road would provide an alternative route, enhance road connectivity, and help alleviate traffic congestion.
“I will continue to push for its implementation under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP),” he emphasised. — UKASnews
