Improved Road Connectivity Could Position Kapit As Regional Economic Gateway
KUCHING: Kapit could be positioned as a potential gateway for regional economic development through improved road connectivity.
In this regard, Pelagus Assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang urged the Sarawak Government to prioritise continuation of road connectivity from Nanga Pelagus through Merit, Anap and Sangan, onwards to Bintulu.
According to him, this proposed connection must be recognised not merely as a rural road, but as a strategic economic corridor linking Kapit and the interior of Sarawak to Bintulu's industrial and port facilities.
“Beyond improving domestic connectivity, this proposed corridor also holds significant potential for regional economic development.
“With future road connectivity towards Tapak Megah in Kapit and Long Nawang in Kalimantan, Indonesia, it could provide an alternative route linking Sarawak to Nusantara, Indonesia's new capital.
“Such connectivity would position Kapit as a potential gateway for cross-border trade, investment, tourism and economic cooperation between Sarawak and Kalimantan, Indonesia while opening new markets and opportunities for our rural communities,” he said.
He said this when debating the Supply (2027) Bill, 2026 at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Friday.
Wilson noted that Kapit possesses considerable potential in agriculture, agro-processing, livestock, food production and other value-added industries.
Therefore, he said a reliable connection to Bintulu would reduce logistical barriers, improve market access, attract investment and create new business and employment opportunities, particularly for the younger generation. -UKASnews
