KUCHING: Forest restoration efforts in Sarawak continue to gain momentum with the development of a seedball machine capable of producing up to 3,000 seedballs daily, specifically targeting reforestation in hard-to-reach areas.
Sarawak Deputy Premier and Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan stated that the technology — developed through a collaboration between Forest Department Sarawak and University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) — provides a practical and efficient alternative method for forest restoration programs.
“This technology offers an alternative approach to support forest restoration programs, particularly in inaccessible terrain, thereby expanding our options for more practical and efficient reforestation methods,” he said.
He said this when delivering his ministerial winding-up speech at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting here on Wednesday.
According to him, conservation initiatives are further reinforced through strategic partnerships with various stakeholders, including wildlife monitoring and rescue operations within the Baleh Hydroelectric Project area in collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).
In a related development, he noted that the Sarawak Reef Ball Project Phase 1 received global recognition as the World’s Longest Reef Ball Barrier Reef from The Reef Ball Foundation based in Florida, United States. — UKASnews
