International Golf Tournament Draws 156 Participants, Boosts Sarawak Tourism
KUCHING: The Sarawak International Senior Amateur Golf Championship 2026 (SISAGC 2026), which brings together 156 players from six countries, is expected to boost Sarawak's sports tourism and hospitality industry.
Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the inaugural tournament has the potential to attract more international visitors, creating a spillover effect for the local tourism industry.
According to him, hosting international-level sporting events not only provides a competitive platform for participants, but also gives them the opportunity to explore Sarawak's unique culture, tourist destinations and various attractions.
"Any event that brings benefits, especially international-level events involving participation from outside Sarawak, is warmly welcomed by the state government," he said.
He said this at a press conference in conjunction with SISAGC 2026 here on Thursday.
Dato Sri Abdul Karim explained that the tournament also targets senior golfers who may extend their stay with their families, thereby increasing tourist spending and stimulating local economic activity.
Meanwhile, SISAGC 2026 Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Eddie Abdullah said the Sarawak Government's support through the event tourism grant has been a catalyst for the staging of the tournament.
"We would like to record our appreciation to Dato Sri Abdul Karim for believing in our vision and giving strong support since day one.
"The support through the event tourism grant is an important foundation in realising this Asian and regional-level platform," he said.
The tournament, organised by Borneo Superact Events, will be held at the Sarawak Golf Club (KGS) from 24 to 25 October, involving players from Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea and Japan.
The 36-hole competition offers total cash prizes of up to RM22,000, with four men's categories and three women's categories.
Participation in the women's categories is open to players aged 50 and above. -UKASnews
