SARIKEI: Community and village leaders (KMKK) are urged to intensify the dissemination of information regarding legal protection to raise public awareness on domestic violence issues.
Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said that KMKK play a vital role in sharing information concerning victims' rights and channels to seek assistance, particularly among residents in villages and longhouses.
According to him, knowledge gained through advocacy programmes must be shared with local communities so they better understand domestic violence issues and the steps required to obtain appropriate protection.
“Community leaders can also assist in connecting individuals requiring protection with relevant agencies, besides encouraging them to seek help through the proper official channels,” he said.
He said this when officiating the Legal Advocacy Programme on the Domestic Violence Act 1994 (Act 521) at the Sarawak Government Administration Office, Sarikei Division, on Saturday.
Datuk Len Talif emphasised that every case must be handled with utmost care, prioritising the safety of victims and maintaining information confidentiality to prevent exposing them to additional risks.
He added that collaboration among KMKK, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is essential to strengthening information delivery and ensuring victims are fully aware of available support. — UKASnews
