Sarawak Strengthens Energy Security Through Oil & Gas Resources & Renewables
SINGAPORE: Sarawak is working towards strengthening energy security by developing onshore and offshore oil and gas resources while expanding hydropower and solar generation.
Sarawak Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said that the results of these efforts are already evident through production of oil.
“In July 2026, PETROS and PETRA Energy commenced first oil production from the Adong Kechil West Early Production System in Block SK433 in Miri, producing about 800 barrels of oil per day and reviving onshore production after nearly 50 years.
“We are building on this momentum, with further onshore exploration focused on Balingian, Limbang, Marudi and Niah.
“In parallel, PETROS is exploring the integrated development of offshore gas fields in Western Sarawak, off the coast of Kuching to establish a reliable source of gas supply for the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub,” he said.
He said this when speaking during the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2026 at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre here on Tuesday.
Datuk Dr Hazland noted that at the same time, nine Solar Power Purchase Agreements have been signed, representing 1,450 megawatts of solar capacity.
According to him, together with hydropower, this will increase the contribution of renewables to Sarawak’s energy mix, while gas provides the firm power needed to support the transition.
“Power generation is only useful if we can deliver electricity reliably across Sarawak. The Bunut–Medamit–Limbang grid, completed in July this year, and the Lawas transmission network have strengthened supply in northern Sarawak.
“With Limbang connected to the main Sarawak Grid, we can move away from dependence on diesel generation and create further opportunities to extend supply,” he said.
He added that this infrastructure forms the foundation of the Sarawak-Sabah Interconnection, marking a major milestone towards realising the Borneo Grid and the greater ASEAN Power Grid initiative. -UKASnews
