Sarawak To Consider Extending FTES Benefits To Students At Federal Public Universities
KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Sarawak Government has agreed in principle to consider extending the benefits of the Free Tertiary Education Sarawak (FTES) initiative to Sarawakians studying at federal public universities with campuses in the state.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the proposal was raised following a request from the universities for Sarawakians pursuing their studies at these institutions to also be considered for FTES benefits.
"At the request of the Vice-Chancellor, we held discussions and they proposed that Sarawakians studying at federal public universities with campuses in Sarawak also be considered for inclusion in the FTES programme.
"In principle, I agree, and when we regain the mandate and authority, we will consider this for approval," he said.
He said this when met by reporters after attending the 30th Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Convocation Ceremony, Third Session, at Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra (DeTAR PUTRA) on Tuesday.
According to him, the initial consideration involves Sarawakians studying at the campuses of the public universities in Sarawak, including UNIMAS, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
However, extending the benefits to Sarawakians pursuing their studies at universities in Peninsular Malaysia has not been decided for the time being.
"This means only Sarawakians studying in Sarawak. For those studying in the Peninsula, let's wait first," he said.
He also explained that FTES currently covers 64 designated courses, while pocket money assistance is also provided to students throughout Malaysia.
Also present was Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (Education), Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee. -UKASnews
