UNIMAS Strengthens Its Role As Driver Of Sarawak’s Digital Transformation
KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) continues to solidify its position as a leader in Malaysia’s digital transformation, becoming the first public university (IPTA) in the country to implement two international technology certifications — Gemini Certified Educator and Google Certified Educator.
UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Hata Rasit, said this initiative is part of the university’s strategy to ensure that its staff and graduates are globally competent, in line with rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and green technology.
“These certifications guarantee that UNIMAS lecturers and students are well-prepared to meet the demands of global industries, which increasingly rely on digital skills and AI literacy,” he said during his speech at the 29th UNIMAS Convocation Ceremony at DeTAR Putra, UNIMAS, on Tuesday.
In addition, UNIMAS has established a Digital Experience Hub in collaboration with Google for Education, making it the first public university in Malaysia to offer internationally certified training, Chromebook adoption, and the integration of Gemini AI and Google Workspace into teaching and learning processes.
He added that this initiative not only enhances digital proficiency among the campus community but also supports Sarawak’s goal of becoming the Digital Hub of Borneo.
“Through platforms such as the Digital Technology NEXUS and collaborations with Loughborough University London, UNIMAS is now a key driver in advancing artificial intelligence and green technology in the region,” he said.
He further noted that digital transformation efforts also extend to student safety and welfare through the introduction of the UNIMAS Prihatin app, which features a quick-response or panic button function to ensure the safety of students and staff, including persons with disabilities.
This initiative reflects UNIMAS’ commitment to integrating smart technology with campus community wellbeing, aligned with its vision of creating a smart, inclusive and resilient learning ecosystem.
“Digital transformation is not just about technology — it is a shift in work culture and mindset.
“We want every member of the UNIMAS community to become an agent of innovation who contributes positively to society and the nation,” he emphasised.
This year’s convocation celebrates a total of 4,100 graduates, comprising 3,448 undergraduate and 652 postgraduate graduates, along with special recognition for three distinguished academics who were conferred the titles of Professor Emeritus and Professor Emerita in honour of their outstanding service and contributions to higher education and research.
Also present at the ceremony were Sarawak Premier and UNIMAS Pro-Chancellor, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, Chairman of the UNIMAS Board of Directors, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik, university management, parents and other honoured guests. -UKASnews
