UTS Graduates Urged To Shoulder The Responsibility Of Building Sarawak’s Future
SIBU: The Sarawak Governor, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, has called upon graduates of Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) to continue shouldering the responsibility of building the state’s future based on knowledge, integrity and unity.
Speaking at the 10th UTS Convocation Ceremony held at the university’s Grand Hall on Saturday, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi said the graduates now bear a significant trust to play their part in realising Sarawak’s vision of becoming a developed, prosperous and sustainable state by 2030, in line with the aspirations of the Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.
“Sarawak is moving towards becoming a digital hub, a green energy powerhouse, and a centre for technology and innovation, with the potential to emerge as a regional hub for aerospace and aviation.
“High-impact projects such as the new Kuching International Airport, the Tanjung Embang cargo port, the integrated hydrogen plant, and the digital economy are opening vast opportunities for the younger generation,” he said.
Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi also reminded the people of Sarawak to remain united and steadfast in defending the state’s rights as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
He further emphasised the importance of rejecting corruption and upholding the values of integrity in every action, expressing his support for the establishment of the Sarawak Ombudsman Department to ensure clean and accountable governance.
Meanwhile, UTS Vice-Chancellor, Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr. Khairuddin Abdul Hamid, said that this 10th convocation ceremony saw a total of 408 graduates from 21 academic programmes receiving their degrees.
Of that number, 44 graduates received postgraduate degrees, while 364 others were awarded bachelor’s degrees.
The ceremony also witnessed the presentation of the Chancellor’s Award to Bernard Kieu Boon Chee (Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours), the Academic Award to Esther Tiong Ying Ying (Bachelor of Accounting with Honours), and Darrel Simbas Ritchie (Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours).
Additionally, 26 graduates received Industry, Leadership, and Book Awards sponsored by various agencies and organisations.
During this historic event, the UTS Board of Directors and Senate conferred the title of Emeritus Professor upon Dato’ Dr. Abdul Hakim Juri in recognition of his significant contributions as the Founding Vice-Chancellor of UTS, who laid a strong foundation for the university’s academic and leadership development.
Also present were the wife of the Head of State, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr. Annuar Rapaee; Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordination for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi; as well as members of the UTS Board of Directors. -UKASnews
