Sarawak–Taiwan Alumni Network Poised To Support High-Tech Talent Development
MIRI: The longstanding Sarawak–Taiwan alumni network is expected to play a stronger role in nurturing high-tech talent as Sarawak advances its technology-driven development agenda, said Councillor Leslie Lau Ik Chie.
Representing Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (Tourism), Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, he delivered the speech during the 61st Anniversary Dinner of the Taiwan Alumni Association of Sarawak, held in Miri on Friday.
Councillor Leslie said the number of Sarawak students pursuing studies in Taiwan has declined in recent years, but emerging opportunities in semiconductors, advanced manufacturing and digital technology could revitalise interest among local youths.
He emphasised that Taiwan’s well-established technological ecosystem, including world-renowned institutions such as TSMC, offers a competitive platform for Sarawak students to acquire specialised skills and exposure.
“As Sarawak strengthens its focus on high-tech industries, including chip production, aerospace technology and related sectors, we see significant potential for strategic collaboration with Taiwan,” he said.
He noted that the Sarawak Government is actively transforming the state’s technological landscape, supported by initiatives such as free tertiary education, industry-driven training programmes and the development of new technology clusters.
“These efforts create a conducive environment for young talents to return home and take part in fast-growing sectors. The challenges of the past, when graduates struggled to secure suitable jobs, are no longer the reality today,” he added.
Councillor Leslie encouraged students studying abroad to come back and contribute to state development, stressing that Sarawak now provides strong platforms for skills enhancement, innovation and professional advancement.
He also praised the Taiwan Alumni Association of Sarawak for sustaining its legacy for six decades and maintaining strong community bonds rooted in knowledge, service and cultural exchange.
“Unity and communication remain essential values. With these, the association can continue to grow, not just to its 61st milestone but even beyond a century,” he said.
Organised by the Taiwan Alumni Association of Sarawak and hosted by the Miri Taiwan Alumni Association, the dinner brought together generations of former Taiwan graduates who have contributed to Sarawak’s progress in education, business, public service and community development. -UKASnews
