Miri Youth Empowered To Drive City’s Sustainability Agenda
MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) is strengthening youth participation in sustainable development through the Human Capital Development Programme “Empowering Youth, Advancing Sustainability,” which gathered 100 students at the Miri Green Community Hub, Taman Yakin, on Friday.
Officiating the event, Miri Mayor and Pujut Assemblyman, Adam Yii Siew Sang said youth involvement is critical in realising Miri’s aspiration to become a Green, Smart and Liveable International Resort City.
“Sustainability must not be viewed as an option but embraced as a necessity,” he said, adding that global issues such as climate change and waste management require immediate awareness and collective action.
He noted that the programme supports key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly education, climate action and sustainable cities, and commended the strong participation from local institutions.
Earlier, MCC SDG Standing Committee Chairman Cr Jamil Bujang said the initiative provides a platform for youth to share ideas and shape a more sustainable future for Miri.
The programme featured talks on environmental awareness, youth roles in SDGs and PCDS 2030, community values and sustainable financial planning, followed by hands-on workshops including recycling activities and a “Build-a-City” green model challenge. -UKASnews
