Miri Embraces Sustainability & Inclusivity As Pillars Of City Development
MIRI: The commitment to shaping Miri into a green, smart and highly liveable city has been further strengthened through the hosting of the Miri City Mayor’s Awards 2025.
The awards, organised by the Miri City Council (MCC), were officiated by the Mayor of Miri City and Pujut Assemblyman, Adam Yii Siew Sang.
This year’s theme, “Miri – Green Smart & The Most Liveable International Resort City”, reflects the city’s long-term vision for future urban development.
In his remarks, Adam Yii stressed that since its introduction in 2018, the Miri City Mayor’s Awards has grown into a meaningful platform that recognises individuals and organisations whose exceptional contributions go above and beyond for the betterment of the local community.
“A total of 46 nominations were received this year, an encouraging increase that shows the community’s growing awareness of the importance of appreciating the talents, leadership and outstanding contributions of Miri residents,” he said during the ceremony on Sunday.
He explained that 22 award recipients were selected based on how closely their contributions align with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reflecting Miri’s aspiration to grow in a balanced, inclusive and sustainable manner.
This year’s ceremony also marked a historic moment with the introduction of a new category, the Miri City Mayor’s Special Award 2025 (Posthumous): Pioneering Contribution to the Development of Miri, established to honour a pioneering figure who had made a significant impact on the city’s development.
The award was presented to the late Yong Khow in recognition of his service and lasting legacy.
A variety of award categories were presented throughout the event, including Youth, Culture and Sports, Community Work and Young Leadership, Tourism Promotion, Safety and Security, Youth Training and Community Service, Environment, Media and Education.
Among the recipients were the Miri Youth Association, Miri Musical Society, IANA Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (Siti Payung), Mercure Miri City Centre, SMK Merbau and My Sufri Chanel by Sufri Yusof Shamsudin.
The Datuk Bandar’s Special Award 2025 for the Tourism category was presented to Lee Tian Song @ Harry Lee, while the highest honour of the evening, the Grand Miri City Mayor’s Award, was bestowed upon Dato’ Sri Law Kiu Kiong for his extensive contributions to the development and prosperity of Miri.
Adding to the significance of the occasion were the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and Piasau Assemblyman, Dato Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching, Dr Abdullah Zulkifli, Miri City Deputy Mayor, Ariffin Mohamad, Miri Division Resident, Galong Luang, Miri District Officer, Siti Rohanie Yusof, along with former mayors, former deputy mayors, councillors, department heads and members of the Miri City Child Councillors. -UKASnews
