LoongAir’s Inaugural Shenzhen-Kuching Flight Strengthens Sarawak-China Air Connectivity
KUCHING: Sarawak marked a major milestone in its international air connectivity with the arrival of LoongAir’s inaugural direct flight from Shenzhen on Tuesday, celebrated during a reception at the VIP Terminal of Kuching International Airport.
Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) Datu Wong Hee Sieng, representing Sarawak Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, officiated the event alongside Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching Xing Weiping.
In his remarks, Datu Wong highlighted the significance of the new Shenzhen-Kuching route, which will operate weekly every Tuesday under LoongAir’s Scheduled Chartered Flight programme.
He said the inaugural flight, GJ8055, departed Shenzhen at 8.20 a.m. and arrived in Kuching at 12.50 p.m. carrying 85 passengers, while the return flight tonight is expected to depart at 7.55 p.m. with 171 passengers.
He described the encouraging load factor as a clear indication of strong potential demand.
“This is a very positive development for our connectivity with China,” he said.
Datu Wong revealed that LoongAir is planning to expand its presence in Sarawak, with new direct routes from Hangzhou and Guangzhou expected to begin operations in March next year.
“These additions will enhance mobility and convenience for travellers by removing the need to transit through Kuala Lumpur or Kota Kinabalu,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) will intensify promotional efforts in China to attract more visitors.
Meanwhile, Datu Wong said increased arrival will generate economic spillover, particularly for Kuching’s tourism and hospitality sectors.
He also noted that improved connectivity could encourage additional airlines from China and other regions to consider operating in Sarawak, further strengthening bilateral ties between China and Malaysia, especially in the state.
“We look forward to seeing more direct flights and deeper cooperation that will bring long-term benefits to both sides,” he said. -UKASnews
