Inspiring Journeys Highlight Convocation Ceremony At OKU Day 2025
KUCHING: The convocation ceremony held in conjunction with the Sarawak Persons with Disabilities (OKU) Day 2025 celebrated not only the achievements of trainees from Pusat Pemulihan Sarawak (PPS), but also several individuals whose resilience and dedication left a lasting impression.
One of the standout recipients was David Ngu Tai Giin, who received the 'Ibu Bapa OKU (Inspirasi)' Award for Inspiration.
Despite the challenges of raising a child with autism, David remained steadfast in advocating for early intervention.
His son, Enoch aged 10 years old, is thriving in mainstream education.
As President of the Sibu Autistic Association, David also leads Taska Autisme Sibu and the Pusat Jagaan Autisme Sibu, supporting families across the region.
The 'Inspirasi OKU (Ibu Bapa)' Award for Parents went to Adzohari Jamil, 61, a visually impaired community advocate.
His long involvement in programmes for the blind and his role as President of the Sarawak Para Lawn Bowl Association highlight his service to the OKU community.
His greatest pride, however, is seeing all three of his children graduate from university.
The Abylimpics Award was presented to Yeoh Suh Chan, 61, an OKU (hearing) artist whose exceptional talent in painting has earned national and international recognition.
Her most significant achievement was winning a Silver Medal at the 2016 International Abilympics in France.
The highest honour of the ceremony, the Special Prominent OKU Award, was received by Francis Johen, 72, whose lifetime of service in law and public administration continues to inspire many.
Despite being diagnosed with a disability at 16, Francis built a distinguished career, from earning a Law degree at Universiti Malaya to serving as Deputy State Attorney-General and contributing extensively to academia and community development.
The convocation concluded with an atmosphere of pride and gratitude, celebrating individuals who have shown that perseverance, talent, and community spirit remain at the heart of Sarawak’s inclusive progress. -UKASnews
