Pulau Bruit Riverine Residents Urged To Remain Vigilant Against Crocodile Threat
DARO: Residents, particularly children and teenagers currently enjoying the school holidays, have been advised to exercise greater caution when spending time along riverbanks, especially on Pulau Bruit, following reports of crocodiles being sighted more frequently near residential areas.
The reminder was stressed by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, following an incident involving an attack by the aggressive reptile at Rumah Jingga, Kelai, Pulau Bruit, last Friday, which involved a 14-year-old boy.
According to him, the incident was the first of its kind to occur within an Iban community settlement on the island, serving as a stark reminder of the risks faced by communities living close to river areas.
“In light of this incident, I would like to advise all youngsters who are currently on their school holidays, especially those living along riverbanks, to always remain vigilant, as there have been reports of many crocodiles roaming in search of food in areas between Daro, Serdeng and the surrounding vicinity,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after visiting the victim’s family and observing the ongoing search and rescue (SAR) operation at Rumah Jingga, Kelai, Pulau Bruit, on Sunday.
Datuk Abdullah, who is also the Semop Assemblyman, said that riverbanks on Pulau Bruit form the lifeline of the local community, with most residents relying on fishing and net-casting activities as their source of livelihood.
As such, he stressed that safety considerations must be taken seriously.
He also highlighted the proposal for immediate measures, including the installation of large warning signboards at high-risk locations to clearly alert residents and visitors to the presence and threat of crocodiles in the area.
In addition, he expressed hope that a survey would be carried out to assess the number of crocodiles roaming in the affected areas, as well as to consider the need for follow-up actions, including crocodile population management.
Meanwhile, Tanjung Manis Member of Parliament, Dato Ir Yusuf Abdul Wahab, also advised residents to remain cautious when near rivers, whether for livelihood activities or leisure.
“We may not be able to control the number of crocodiles, but we can control our own activities. Do not encourage children to play by the river.
“Take precautionary measures, avoid areas known to have a high presence of crocodiles, and do not go alone. If anything happens, a companion can provide assistance,” he said. -UKASnews
