KUCHING: Infrastructure, education and welfare continue to be prioritised by the Sarawak Government in line with the implementation of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which serves as the main driver of the state’s development in the post-pandemic era.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said that throughout 2025, Sarawak recorded clear progress in socio-economic development, bringing tangible benefits and improved well-being to the people.
According to him, more than 1,000 kilometres of new and upgraded roads have been completed, including significant progress on the Pan Borneo Highway, which is now fully completed along its main stretches.
This has made travel safer and faster, while opening up greater economic growth potential in both urban and rural areas.
“The quality of life of the people has also been enhanced through wider access to clean water supply, electricity coverage and internet connectivity.
“Digital transformation is being driven through the establishment of international-standard data centres, the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud technology, as well as more efficient and user-friendly e-government systems,” he said in his message in conjunction with the New Year 2026 celebration on Wednesday.
The Sarawak Premier added that human capital development remains at the core of the state’s progress, through the implementation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes, the provision of scholarships, and the introduction of the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) beginning in 2026.
This initiative will enable Sarawakian children to access quality education without financial constraints.
He further explained that the Sarawak Government will continue implementing the Sarawak Basic Needs Contribution (SKAS), with a higher allocation of RM640 million this year, to help ease the burden of the rising cost of living.
He also reaffirmed the Sarawak Government’s strong commitment to protecting forests, rivers and biodiversity, while strengthening the development of clean energy, to ensure environmental sustainability is preserved for future generations. -UKASnews
