KUCHING: Sarawak once again etched its name on the international stage after successfully setting a Guinness World Records (GWR) title for the Longest GPS Journey Using a Drone Relay, spanning from Tanjung Datu in the south to Lawas in the north and covering a total of 128 flight segments.
The prestigious recognition was officially announced during the Sarawak Countdown 2026 programme, held in a lively atmosphere at the Kuching Waterfront.
The moment marked the highlight of the New Year’s Eve celebrations ushering in 2026, which drew thousands of revellers.
The presentation of the world record certificate was officiated by Guinness World Records Official Adjudicator, Jacob Yip Chiong Wai, and received by the Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Beyond being a technical achievement, the success stands as a symbol of unity, discipline and confidence among the people of Sarawak in exploring the new potential of creative technology while promoting tourism on a global scale.
The initiative further reinforces Sarawak’s narrative as the “Gateway to Borneo”, in line with the state’s aspiration to be more competitive and visible on the global stage.
The historic segment was organised in collaboration with the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) and was further enlivened by the launch of a special drone film showcasing Sarawak’s natural beauty, cultural diversity and modern development.
This was followed by a captivating visual and light display.
The Countdown 2026 celebration, themed “Let Celebrate Together”, was also enlivened by performances from local, national and international artistes, as well as a synchronised fireworks display that marked the official transition into the New Year 2026.
