Three Flood Mitigation Projects Implemented To Address Flooding Issues In Miri
MIRI: The Sarawak Government, through the Miri Division of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), is currently implementing and planning three major flood mitigation projects to address the frequent flooding affecting several areas in Miri City.
Sarawak Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said that two of the projects have already received approval and are expected to be tendered this year, while the remaining project is currently under implementation, with physical progress exceeding 70 per cent.
He explained that the implementation of all three projects is expected to resolve a large part of Miri’s flooding problems. However, he stressed that continuous maintenance must remain a top priority.
“Even once the flood mitigation projects are completed, drainage maintenance by all relevant agencies is extremely important to ensure long-term effectiveness,” he said.
He made these remarks during a press conference after chairing a flood mitigation meeting with the Miri Division Disaster Management Committee (JPBB) and relevant agencies at the DID Miri Division Meeting Room on Saturday.
According to Dato Sri Lee, the first project is the Miri River Flood Mitigation Plan Project for the Miri River Basin, Sarawak, which is currently underway.
The project commenced on 19 October 2023 and has achieved physical progress of 71.53 per cent.
It is scheduled for completion in May 2026 and involves the construction of retaining walls, mobile pump stations and flood mitigation works in the Pangkalan Lutong area and the Krokop Cemetery vicinity.
The second project is the Miri Flood Mitigation Plan Phase II. Site approval for this project was obtained on 14 November 2025.
It involves drainage systems in the Sungai Dalam, Taman Lopeng, Kampung Pujut Tanjung Batu and Taman Tunku areas, and is expected to be tendered this year.
Meanwhile, the third project is the Sungai Lutong B Flood Mitigation Plan Project in the Miri Division.
Site approval was obtained on 28 December 2025.
The project covers the Desa Senadin, Kampung Sealine, MCOT and Lutong areas, and is also expected to be tendered this year.
In terms of post-flood measures, he also instructed that immediate repair works be carried out, particularly road patching to address potholes, in the interest of road user safety, especially motorcyclists.
He also highlighted plans to raise road levels in several low-lying areas, such as Jalan Ilmu.
Regarding temporary evacuation centres (PPS), Dato Sri Lee said that three centres had been opened at Dewan Pujut Tanjung Batu, Masjid Darul Imam Kampung Tudan Phase Two, and Dewan Komuniti Tudan Phase Four, involving 37 families and a total of 153 flood victims.
He assured that the welfare of those affected is well taken care of, with sufficient food supplies, hot water facilities, fogging operations carried out by the Ministry of Health, and the isolation of symptomatic individuals in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP). -UKASnews
