Sarawak Energy Receives Environmental Excellence Recognition At PMHA 2024/2025
KUCHING: Sarawak Energy was recently recognised for its environmental management and sustainable practices, receiving multiple accolades at the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award (PMHA) 2024/2025 held in Kuala Lumpur on 27 January.
The vertically integrated power utility and energy developer’s Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) received the Excellent Achievement in Environmental Performance award, while Murum HEP and Sejingkat Power Corporation (SPC) were recognised with the Exceptional Achievement Award in Environmental Performance.
Additionally, Mukah Power Generation (MPG) received the Notable Achievement Award in Environmental Performance.
“The recognition received by Sarawak Energy at PMHA 2024/2025 follows Bakun HEP’s recent international recognition for its hydropower sustainability performance.
“Malaysia’s largest renewable energy facility, the Bakun HEP has received Silver Certification under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, highlighting its efforts in community engagement, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and governance.
“In September 2025, Bakun HEP was also awarded the International Hydropower Association’s (IHA) Blue Planet Prize.
“The award recognises the best-performing hydropower projects assessed between July 2023 and June 2025 that demonstrate outstanding sustainability performance under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, covering environmental, governance and social topics,” Sarawak Energy said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
The awards ceremony was officiated by Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Dato’ Sri Arthur Joseph Kurup.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Energy Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili said the recognition highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to strengthening environmental management and sustainable practices across its operations.
“This is supported by structured governance frameworks and corporate-level environmental programmes, including circular economy initiatives, Go Green campaigns and biodiversity conservation activities which guide how our facilities are planned, developed and operated.
“Sarawak Energy is also the first corporate body in Malaysia to commit to the United Nations Global Compact Network’s ‘Business Ambition for 1.5°C’ pledge, reflecting our efforts to limit global temperature rise and support long-term climate action.
“These practices are aligned with the Sarawak Government’s priorities on sustainable development, environmental protection and inclusive growth under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he added. -UKASnews
