LAWAS: The Sarawak Government is strengthening continuous monitoring of mega projects in Lawas to ensure implementation remains on schedule, thereby guaranteeing a comprehensive developmental impact on the northern region of the state.
Sarawak Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, stated that this proactive monitoring approach allows any issues to be identified early and resolved immediately without affecting project progress.
According to him, among the key projects being monitored is the Lawas Aquatic Centre.
At the same time, the Lawas Bridge project, under the supervision of the Northern Region Development Agency (NRDA), has recorded 83.8 per cent progress. It is expected to be completed and officiated before the end of this year, potentially becoming a new landmark for the district.
He said this during a working visit to several major project sites in the district on Thursday, including the Lawas Aquatic Centre, Lawas Bridge, and the Mengkalap Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex.
Commenting further, he informed that while the Mengkalap ICQS Complex has adequate facilities, it still faces constraints regarding personnel shortages.
Additionally, the ‘No Man’s Land’ area issue at the Brunei-Malaysia border involves infrastructure development challenges that will be brought to the attention of the Ministry of Home Affairs for further action.
Meanwhile, regarding the Ba’kelalan ICQS Post, he explained that while the building is completed, road access remains a major challenge. Upgrading works are currently in the tender process following the government's provision of allocations.
Also in attendance were Lawas Member of Parliament Dato Henry Sum Agong, NRDA Regional Director Datu Ubaidillah Abdul Latip, and Sarawak Implementation Monitoring Unit (SIMU) Director Sapiah Daud. — UKASnews
