Early Zakat Fitrah Payments Bring Relief Ahead Of Syawal
KUCHING: As Muslims count down the days to celebrate Aidilfitri, the obligation to pay Zakat Fitrah is more than just a ritual requirement; it serves as a 'bridge' connecting compassion with the hopes of the asnaf (those in need).
The public is urged to fulfill their Zakat Fitrah obligations early to avoid the last-minute rush, thereby ensuring the distribution process can be completed smoothly before the arrival of Syawal.
For most of the community, Zakat Fitrah carries a deeper meaning—it is a symbol of self-purification throughout Ramadan and a sign of social responsibility toward the less fortunate.
As a head of the family, Naim Laud admits that this duty is never taken lightly.
According to him, he prefers paying zakat face-to-face because he feels the method is more meaningful and offers a unique sense of satisfaction.
"I personally prefer the face-to-face method because this zakat is only paid once a year. Compared to online, the sense of satisfaction is a bit lacking," he said when met by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) on Friday.
Naim, who usually pays his zakat a week before Hari Raya, also reminded Muslims not to forget this responsibility, especially as Aidilfitri preparations reach their peak.
A similar view was shared by Suraya Sahat, who also opts for face-to-face payment, though she admits the method depends on current circumstances.
According to her, internet connectivity challenges are among the factors driving her toward the conventional method.
"Sometimes the internet coverage isn't very cooperative for making payments. The coverage has issues," she remarked.
She added that payments are usually made either at the beginning of Ramadan or toward the end of the fasting month, depending on financial status and available time. She also advised the public not to wait until the final hour.
"I advise the public to pay early to avoid late payments," she added.
Meanwhile, Zakat Collector (Amil) Abdullah Mohd Anis informed that the Zakat Fitrah rate this year remains at RM7.50 per person, the same as the previous year.
He noted that this year’s response shows an earlier increase compared to last year, with two collection books already completed.
"This year is a bit faster than previous years, and it's likely that next week there will be even more people and faster payments," he explained.
He also reminded the public to prepare the exact amount of money when coming to pay to avoid any inconvenience.
Commenting on payment methods, he explained that online payments are valid under Islamic law, but the face-to-face method carries its own added value.
"Online methods are legally valid, but with face-to-face, there is a prayer (doa). Doing it this way is actually better because there is a sense of blessing compared to the online method," he said.
Overall, community awareness regarding the obligation to pay Zakat Fitrah appears to be increasing.
Early payment not only eases administrative tasks but also provides room for the asnaf to receive assistance sooner, allowing them to celebrate Aidilfitri with joy and enjoy the sweetness of Syawal. -UKASnews
