PSSS Strengthens Mental Health Support, Reaches Out To Communities Professionally
KUCHING: The Pusat Sokongan Sosial Setempat (PSSS) continues to reinforce its role as a safe space for the public to obtain professional counselling, advice and support, particularly in addressing mental health issues that are receiving increasing attention.
Minister for Women, Family and Community Development Malaysia, Dato Sri Nancy Shukri, said mental health must be given equal priority alongside physical health, as every individual inevitably faces stress and life’s challenges.
According to her, several serious criminal cases have been identified as stemming from untreated mental health problems.
“When incidents occur such as individuals killing their own family members or others, we often find that they are rooted in mental health issues.
“As such, we must collectively take responsibility for caring for one another, including among neighbours, so that we remain aware of what is happening around us.
“That is why we are strengthening the activities and programmes of this social support centre,” she said when speaking at the 'Program Mindness Tour: Kaunseling Kasih PSSS Yayasan Kebajikan Negara' (YKN) at Kampung Selabat Multipurpose Hall, Demak Laut on Saturday.
The Santubong MP further informed that 600 zakat recipients across three State Legislative Assembly (DUN) areas — Tanjong Datu, Pantai Damai and Demak Laut — have been identified to receive assistance.
In addition, a total of 1,033 food baskets were contributed by Yayasan Kebajikan Negara, PEKEMA and PETRONAS to assist those in need.
“In Kampung Selabat and its surrounding areas, 77 asnaf recipients from 11 villages received food baskets from Yayasan Kebajikan Negara as a symbol of care and continued support.
“Assistance such as this not only fulfils daily necessities, but also instils hope and resilience within the community.
“It reflects the government’s ongoing efforts together with strategic partners to ensure that no one is left behind, while empowering every community in a comprehensive manner,” she said.
