Chinese Companies Eye Investment Opportunities In Sarawak
KUCHING: Chairman of Shandong Port Group, China, Wang Wei led a delegation of representatives from Chinese companies on a courtesy call on Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan to explore potential investment opportunities in the state.
Participating in the delegation during the courtesy call here on Friday were Vice President of Yatong Petrochemical Group, Yu Kechao, Director and General Manager of Tianye Corporation, Shan Dan, and other senior management representatives of the companies.
According to a statement, the delegation expressed interest in exploring avenues for investments in Sarawak, particularly in port development and management, as well in the petrochemical and agriculture sectors.
“During the meeting, the visiting Chinese companies highlighted their capabilities in integrated supply chain services, smart and green port development, commodity warehousing, and advanced petrochemical and agri-processing technologies.
“These areas present strong potential for strategic collaboration with Sarawak,” the statement said.
In this regard, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah welcomed quality investments that support Sarawak’s development agenda under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 which aims to achieve economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.
“Sarawak is committed to providing a conducive business ecosystem through continuous efforts to modernise infrastructure, including transport and logistics networks, telecommunications and utilities,” he said.
He invited the delegation to pursue further discussions with the relevant authorities to explore specific investment opportunities.
Furthermore, the Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) encouraged the delegation to explore investment opportunities in Sarawak by leveraging the state’s natural resources, strategic location and access to the fast-growing Southeast Asian market and global trade networks.
He highlighted Sarawak’s potential to become a regional hub for the entire value chain of the petrochemical and food industries, particularly in serving the expanding halal market.
He further noted that one of Sarawak’s key advantages lies in its abundant renewable energy resources, adding that the state aims to generate 10 gigawatts of energy by 2030 and position itself as the ‘Battery of ASEAN’.
Also present were MINTRED Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, MINTRED Permanent Secretary Datu Lester Matthew, General Manager of Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation Datu Zainal Abidin Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of InvestSarawak Timothy Ong, and officers from Petroleum Sarawak Berhad. -UKASnews
