Betong To Host STF Gawai Dayak Open House & Parade 2026, Showcasing Unique Cultural Identity
KUCHING: The STF Gawai Dayak Open House and Parade 2026 celebration to be held in Betong is expected to be one of Sarawak's main cultural attractions during Visit Malaysia 2026, further strengthening the state’s position as a culture-based tourism destination.
Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the event not only celebrates the traditions of the Dayak community but also provides a valuable opportunity to promote Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage to visitors from within and outside the country.
According to him, the Gawai Dayak celebration symbolises gratitude following the harvest season and serves as an important occasion for communities to gather, strengthen bonds and preserve traditions passed down through generations.
“Beyond its cultural significance, Gawai also reflects the values of hospitality, togetherness and strong community spirit that form part of Sarawak’s identity,” he said when speaking at a press conference on the festival’s organisation here on Friday.
Dato Sri Abdul Karim added that the selection of Betong as the host location is particularly significant, as the district is rich in Dayak cultural heritage and known for its strong community spirit.
He noted that events such as this also benefit local entrepreneurs, craft practitioners and small businesses through increased tourist arrivals.
Therefore, he called on members of the media and tourism industry players to continue supporting and promoting the festival so that more visitors will have the opportunity to experience the uniqueness of the Gawai Dayak celebration in Betong.
Dato Sri Abdul Karim expressed confidence that the STF Gawai Dayak Open House and Parade 2026 has the potential to become one of the major cultural events contributing to the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, thus introducing Sarawak as a tourism destination rich in culture, traditions and authentic experiences.
Meanwhile, Awang Saifeluddin Awang Karim of Borneo Glamping, representing the Sarawak Tourism Federation, said the Betong Gawai Parade will be held on 6 June and is expected to be among the highlights of the celebration.
He said last year’s parade attracted about 3,000 visitors, while approximately 1,500 participants are expected to take part in this year’s edition.
“This parade highlights unique cultural elements. What distinguishes Betong is that the cultural performances featured in the parade are different from those typically seen in other locations such as Kuching.
“Interestingly, the parade also involves participation from people of various backgrounds and beliefs, reflecting the spirit of unity among Sarawakians,” he said.
Also present at the press conference were Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu and Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Morshidi Fredrick. -UKASnews
