BCCK 2 To Accommodate 9,500 Delegates, Strengthening Sarawak As International Convention Hub
KUCHING: Sarawak is set to increase its capacity to host large-scale events with the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching 2 (BCCK 2) project, which is currently under construction and is expected to be fully completed by March 2028.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the new facility is projected to accommodate up to 9,500 delegates at any one time, further reinforcing the state’s position as a leading destination for international conventions and events.
The Sarawak Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development added that the development of BCCK 2 is a strategic initiative by the Sarawak Government to expand the state’s capacity to host international conferences, exhibitions and various large-scale business events.
He said this in a press statement after visiting the project’s construction site here on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, he explained that the project will also complement the existing facilities at BCCK, thereby supporting the rapid growth of Sarawak’s events industry.
During the visit, the contractor also provided a briefing on the procurement plan for construction materials and the supply sources used for the project, including materials sourced from China.
The briefing was important to ensure that any global geopolitical uncertainties, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, would not affect the project’s progress or implementation schedule.
Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah also expressed satisfaction with the current progress of the project’s construction, which he described as encouraging.
According to him, the contractor’s presentation also demonstrated a strong commitment to enhancing project delivery capacity, while the current progress indicates that the project is ahead of schedule and has the potential to be completed earlier than the stipulated date.
Also present were Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) Datu Chiew Chee Yau, and Deputy Director (Technical Services) of the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) Ts Meehan Jorai. -UKASnews
