River Conservation Efforts In Meradong Intensified
SARIKEI: The government continues to intensify efforts to improve the efficiency of the drainage system through the implementation of river and tributary conservation project in the Meradong District to ensure smooth water flow and reduce flood risks in the affected areas.
Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities Dato’ Sri Huang Tiong Sii said the implementation of the project reflects the government’s continued commitment to enhancing drainage infrastructure to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the local community.
According to the Sarikei Member of Parliament, conservation works involve the removal of sediment deposits, obstructions and other materials that could disrupt the smooth flow of rivers.
“With the implementation of these conservation works, I hope they will help reduce flooding issues while ensuring that river water flows more smoothly and remains well preserved for the benefit of the local community,” he said after the project site handover session, represented by Wong Soon Mee together with officers from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), here on Thursday.

Dato’ Sri Huang added that inspections had been carried out to ensure the project adheres to the planned schedule and required specifications.
He also noted that such initiatives are essential to ensure the rivers remain clean and function effectively, providing long-term benefits to the local community, particularly during the rainy season.
Among the areas involved are Sungai Binatang (Palaie) and Sungai Tulai in the Koperasi Tulai area. -UKASnews
