Modest Aidilfitri Celebrations Remain The Choice For Sarawakians
KUCHING: Amid global uncertainty and the rising cost of living, Sarawakians are choosing to celebrate Aidilfitri more modestly this year, prioritising family togetherness and essential needs over luxury.
A survey conducted by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) around Kuching found that the public has begun adjusting their spending in line with the government's call for thriftiness ahead of the Aidilfitri celebrations.
For Navilla, an expatriate working in the Middle East, the experience of returning home this time has given a deeper meaning to the Aidilfitri celebration.
“This year, Hari Raya preparations are quite different for me. I was supposed to return to Kuching earlier, but due to the conflict involving the United States and Iran, my journey home took longer than expected.
“However, this experience has made me appreciate the meaning of Hari Raya more—it’s about gratitude, safety, and the opportunity to be back with loved ones,” she said.
Meanwhile, Fidah noted that the rising cost of living has prompted her to spend more prudently this year.
"Raya preparations are just modest. What's important is that basic needs are met and we can gather with family," she stated.
A similar sentiment was shared by Nurzainura, who emphasised that modesty does not diminish the joy of Aidilfitri.
"We are celebrating modestly, but the important thing is being able to be with family," she said.
In the meantime, the public is seen to be placing greater emphasis on the values of gratitude, safety, and togetherness in welcoming Syawal, in line with the current challenging circumstances. — UKASnews
