Public Urged To Practise Energy & Water Conservation In Conjunction With Aidilfitri
PUTRAJAYA: The public has been urged to practise efficient and prudent use of energy and water throughout the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season, following expectations of a significant rise in consumption during the period.
Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, said electricity usage in the residential sector typically increases by between 20 and 40 per cent compared with normal days, while water consumption is expected to rise by about 30 to 35 per cent, particularly in states that attract large numbers of people returning home for the celebrations.
He said the increase requires cooperation from all parties to ensure that energy and water resources are managed sustainably and do not place undue strain on the existing supply system.
“Simple conservation practices such as switching off electrical appliances when not in use, avoiding standby mode, setting air-conditioner temperatures between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius, as well as using energy-efficient appliances can have a significant impact on reducing electricity consumption,” he said in a media statement issued here on Friday.
With regard to water usage, he emphasised that the target of a maximum daily per capita consumption of 160 litres set by the National Water Services Commission is in line with international standards and can be achieved through consumer discipline.
Among the recommended measures are repairing leaking pipes promptly, using alternative water sources such as rainwater harvesting, ensuring prudent use of water, and practising the reuse of uncontaminated water for daily purposes.
At the same time, he said water supply operators have prepared contingency plans to address any eventualities during the festive season, in order to ensure that water supply remains stable for consumers.
Apart from conservation, the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation also stressed the importance of electrical safety, including ensuring that home wiring is in good condition, not overloading electrical sockets, and using only appliances that carry safety certification.
“These safety measures are important to prevent any untoward incidents, particularly when many people return to their hometowns or leave their homes for an extended period,” he explained.
He added that the effort is in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, which emphasises the well-being of the people, sustainability, and effective governance of resources.
He stressed that practising energy and water efficiency not only helps households save on utility bills, but also supports the national agenda to ensure resources remain sustainable, resilient, and capable of meeting future development needs. -UKASnews
