Commemoration Of Operation Semut Elevated As Heritage Tourism Attraction In Bario
BARIO: The commemoration of the 81st anniversary of the parachute landing by the Z Force unit under Operation Semut has not only revived the history of the Second World War, but is also increasingly highlighting Bario’s potential as a destination for heritage- and community-based tourism.
The event, held at Bario Memorial Park, drew the presence of various parties including international representatives, thereby adding value to the local tourism sector, which is rooted in history, culture and the natural environment.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and Piasau Assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, said Bario possesses a unique distinction as the history of the Operation Semut struggle remains closely connected to the lives of the local community.
According to him, the story of the courage shown by Allied forces together with the Kelabit community can be presented as an authentic and high-impact tourism product.
“The people of Bario, particularly the Kelabit community, played a significant role in ensuring the success of this mission by providing shelter, food supplies and knowledge of the local terrain,” he said.
He said this when speaking at the 81st International Commemoration of the Operation Semut 1945 Parachute Landing here on Friday.
He added that organising such commemorative events has the potential to attract domestic and international tourists, especially those interested in military history and cultural heritage.
At the same time, it also strengthens Malaysia’s ties with Allied nations such as Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom through platforms for cultural and diplomatic exchange.
“By remembering history, we not only honour the past, but also build bridges for the future,” he said.
He also stressed that sustainable tourism development in Bario is capable of bringing direct benefits to the local community, including opening up new economic opportunities in the hospitality, handicraft and tourism services sectors.
In addition, the active involvement of the community in organising the event demonstrates how historical heritage can be preserved while also generating economic value for local residents.
The ceremony also paid tribute to veterans and their families, while serving as an important platform to ensure that the history of Operation Semut continues to be highlighted as a highly valuable tourism asset.
Also present were Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala, international defence representatives as well as local community leaders. -UKASnews
