KUCHING: Sarawak wants to build a robust technology and artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem to ensure local talent continues to stay, contribute and develop their expertise in the state.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs, Public Communications and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, said the development of digital infrastructure and the technology ecosystem needs to move in tandem with efforts to produce more AI experts among young people.

According to him, Sarawak does not want young people with expertise in the digital field to be forced to seek opportunities abroad or in other states due to a lack of an ecosystem that supports the development of their careers.

"We want you to remain here. Therefore, we need to build a conducive ecosystem so that experts can continue to serve and contribute in Sarawak. Together, we will develop Sarawak," he said.

He said this while speaking at the Closing Ceremony of the "AI For Makers: Borneo Makers Festival 2026" programme at TEGAS Digital Village here on Monday.

Datuk Abdullah further noted that AI development can no longer be seen as a passing technology trend, as its use is increasingly influencing almost every aspect of life.

In this regard, he said Sarawak also needs to accelerate the development of digital infrastructure throughout the state to ensure that technology-related opportunities are not concentrated only in urban areas. -UKASnews
