SPM 2025: Sarawak Records Best Performance With 4.79 GPN
KUCHING: Sarawak recorded its best performance in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2025 examination, achieving a State Average Grade (GPN) of 4.79, an improvement of 0.05 from 4.84 in the previous year, marking its best performance since 2013.
Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said candidates from both urban and rural areas showed improved performance, with urban candidates recording a better score of 4.44 compared to 4.46 in SPM 2024.
He said rural candidates also showed notable progress with their score improving by 0.08, from 5.11 in SPM 2024 to 5.03 in SPM 2025.
“This represents a positive indication that ongoing efforts to bridge the education gap between urban and rural areas are yielding meaningful results and we hope for even better outcomes in the future.
“It cannot be denied that location is a primary issue, but we are confident that this polarisation gap will diminish in the near future,” he said during a press conference on the SPM 2025 results here on Tuesday.
He further stated that 27 schools recorded a 100 per cent pass rate, of which 19 were from rural areas.
At the same time, Dato Sri Roland Sagah revealed that 853 students out of 34,166 candidates from Ministry of Education (MOE) schools who sat for the examination scored straight As.
Meanwhile, the number of candidates eligible for the SPM certificate stood at 31,506, equivalent to 93.99 per cent, reflecting a slight decrease of 0.12 per cent compared to SPM 2024.
“Although the percentage has decreased, the total number of students awarded the SPM certificate is in fact higher, showing an increase of 1,165 compared to the previous year.
“This is a commendable achievement for Sarawak, and we are very grateful for these results,” he said.
In terms of subject performance, he noted that Mathematics, English and Science which are among the core SPM subjects recorded improvements in scores ranging between 0.01 and 0.25.
The MEITD Minister added that the pure STEM elective subjects comprising Chemistry, Biology, and Additional Mathematics also showed modest gains with Additional Mathematics improving the most.
He also expressed pride in candidates with special educational needs, who recorded a higher percentage of obtaining the SPM certificate this year at 72.73 per cent.
More notably, four candidates with special educational needs achieved straight As.
