Mayor Inspects Improvements At Lorong Sungai Apong To Enhance Safety
KUCHING: Mayor of Kuching South Dato Wee Hong Seng has conducted a follow-up site inspection at Lorong Sungai Apong to assess the effectiveness of immediate interventions implemented after his previous visit to address road and drainage issues in the area.
The inspection was also attended by Cr Albert Tay and Cr Eric Tay, focusing on improvements aimed at enhancing safety for residents, particularly students commuting to nearby schools including SJK Sungai Apong.
"We will continue to monitor the situation and implement further improvements where needed. Our priority is to ensure that our infrastructure serves everyone safely and effectively, and that no one is left behind as we build a more inclusive and liveable city," Dato Wee said.
During the visit, Dato Wee also met with several students and parents in the area. Positive feedback was received on the improvements made, particularly on the enhanced safety and accessibility.
As part of the engagement, Dato Wee also distributed stationery to students present.
Following the earlier inspection, prompt actions were undertaken by Kuching South City Council (MBKS).
Street lighting has since been installed along the affected stretch, significantly improving visibility during early morning hours and ensuring a safer walking environment for schoolchildren.
In addition, the issue of stagnant water caused by inadequate drainage has been effectively resolved through immediate mitigation measures, including raising the road level and installing perforated piping to facilitate proper water discharge, resulting in a drier and safer road surface even after rainfall.
This initiative forms part of MBKS ongoing efforts under the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI), which prioritises the creation of safe, accessible, and inclusive environments for children. — UKASnews
