Green Energy Development Intensifies As Sarawak Targets Energy Export Market
LIMBANG: Sarawak is progressively intensifying its green energy development as a strategic move to emerge as a regional clean energy hub and reduce dependency on fossil fuels by 2030.
Sarawak Deputy Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development and Bukit Kota Assemblyman Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail stated that Sarawak possesses natural resource advantages that allow for the more aggressive development of renewable energy—such as hydroelectric, solar, and hydrogen—to meet both domestic needs and export markets.
According to him, this approach not only supports the state's low-carbon aspirations but also opens doors for the growth of new high-value industries, including energy storage technology and hydrogen, which can generate more inclusive economic opportunities.
He said this while speaking at the Limbang Islamic Celebration Standing Committee Thanksgiving and Aidilfitri Ramah Tamah 1447H/2026M, held at the Bunga Raya Hall on Thursday.
At the same time, he emphasised that investments in technology and international strategic cooperation will continue to be strengthened to ensure Sarawak remains at the forefront of the new energy economy in Malaysia.
Commenting on the current situation, he noted that the state government is sensitive to the effects of global economic uncertainty, particularly the crisis in Western Asia, which has put pressure on oil prices and the cost of living.
In relation to this, he informed that another assistance package is expected to be announced by the Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, should the situation persist, as a mitigation measure to help affected citizens.
Also in attendance were Limbang District Officer Sulaiman Engal, Chairman of the Limbang District Council Sufian Mohat, representative of the Limbang Division Islamic Religious Officer Abdul Rahman Iqbal Aldi, Limbang Division Health Officer Norliza Jusoh, and Pemanca Sahat Bagol. — UKASnews
