DBKU Issues Stern Warning Against Open Burning Amid Dry Spell
KUCHING: The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has issued an urgent advisory to the public regarding the current hot and dry weather, warning that unauthorised open burning will be met with strict legal action.
The warning follows a significant bushfire incident on Saturday afternoon at Jalan Sultan Tengah, near the Natural Resources Building in Petra Jaya.
The blaze, which scorched approximately three hectares, was reportedly triggered by irresponsible individuals burning cable rubbers. The fire quickly spread to the surrounding vegetation, raising serious concerns over public safety and air quality.
DBKU emphasised that such activities are not only illegal but also dangerous under the present climatic conditions.
"Any open burning activity is strictly prohibited. Activities such as burning rubbish, garden waste, or land clearing not only endanger lives but also impact public health through the resulting haze," DBKU said in a statement on Sunday.
The Commission highlighted that the current weather allows fires to spread with high velocity, making them difficult to control and increasing the risk of major conflagrations.
To mitigate these risks, DBKU has outlined several safety protocols for residents, including to refrain from open burning under any circumstances; monitor surroundings, particularly fire-prone grasslands and bushes; utilise the official waste collection services provided by DBKU instead of burning refuse; reduce outdoor activities if temperatures rise or air quality drops to unhealthy levels; and immediately alert authorities of any fire sightings to ensure prompt intervention.
"DBKU has committed to intensifying monitoring and enforcement efforts across its jurisdiction. Individuals found violating regulations will face action under Section 113 of the Local Authorities Ordinance, 1996," it said.
The commission underscored that preservation of the environment and community safety remains a shared responsibility, requiring the full cooperation of all Kuching residents. — UKASnews
