SARIKEI: Some 1,868 students from three secondary schools in Sarikei have benefited from the 2026 School Uniform and Shoes Distribution Programme.
Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities Dato’ Sri Huang Tiong Sii said the programme has been implemented continuously since 2018 as an effort to ease the financial burden on parents in preparing schooling essentials for their children.
“I hope this contribution will have a positive impact on students so that they can attend school with greater confidence, comfort and enthusiasm to pursue their studies,” he said.
He spoke at the 2026 School Uniform and Shoes Distribution Programme involving students from SMK St Anthony, SMK Bandar Sarikei and SMK Tinggi Sarikei, held here on Wednesday.
The Sarikei Member of Parliament noted that 5,808 students in Sarikei benefited from the initiative while another 2,952 students in Meradong also received assistance.
Overall, the programme benefited 8,760 students across both areas.
Meanwhile, he commended the progressive move by the Sarawak Government in introducing free education at state-owned higher education institutions as part of efforts to strengthen human capital development.
According to him, the initiative is an important investment in the future of the younger generation, allowing them to further their studies without being burdened by financial constraints.
“This clearly demonstrates the Sarawak Government’s commitment to placing the people’s welfare as a top priority.
“I believe every child deserves equal educational opportunities. Make the most of this opportunity and study diligently for a brighter future,” he added.
