Betong Regatta 2026: Strengthening Heritage & Boosting Local Economy
BETONG: The hosting of the Betong Regatta 2026 not only celebrates the river cultural heritage that defines the local identity, but also serves as a catalyst for economic growth and community unity in the region.
According to the Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development and Layar Assemblyman, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, the regatta is among the oldest water sports in Sarawak, dating back to 1873 when it was introduced by Rajah Brooke to foster community ties.
"The Betong Regatta, which has been on a 16-year long hiatus, has now returned so that the people of Betong can compete against one another on the Layar River," he said.
He said this while speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Edition of the Betong Regatta at the Main Regatta Pavilion, Betong Waterfront, on Friday.
In the meantime, Datuk Gerald urged the local community to work together to maintain the cleanliness of the river and the facilities at the Betong Waterfront to prevent pollution and the spread of diseases.
He also encouraged local entrepreneurs to seize the available opportunities to market their products, thereby boosting the local economy.
He added that hosting events such as this can attract tourists, thereby contributing to the development of the tourism sector, small businesses, and creative industries in the area.
A total of 30 teams are participating in this edition, involving heat and final categories including KMKK, departments, and women, thereby creating opportunities for local youth to hone their talents and foster a spirit of cooperation.
In addition to the main boat racing events, various side activities are being organised from 16 to 26 April, including stalls selling local products, MADANI sales, exhibitions by government and private agencies, traditional folk sports, and competitions for fishing, colouring, cooking, handicrafts, and flower arrangement, as well as an aerobathon and a funfair. -UKASnews
