SIPR 2026 Sets MBOR Record, Sibu Recognised As Water Sports Hub
SIBU: The organisation of the Sibu International Powerboat Race (SIPR) 2026 has achieved recognition in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) following the participation of 251 boats, further strengthening its status as a distinguished water sports event.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof said the achievement proves SIPR has strong potential to be developed into an international-level water sports event while at the same time positioning Sibu as a key tourism destination.
According to him, the government will continue to extend its support for the organisation of the event including enhancing its administrative aspects and improving facilities at Tebingan Pulau Li Hua to ensure its continuity as an annual programme.
“The proposed development of Tebingan Pulau Li Hua should be assessed in a comprehensive manner through collaboration with the developers as the area is under private ownership.
“I am confident that the state and federal governments can help revitalise this waterfront area including securing approvals from relevant agencies such as the Sarawak Rivers Board for the provision of better organised facilities like pontoons and a covered stage,” he said.
He made the remarks when delivering his speech at the closing ceremony of SIPR 2026, held at Tebingan Pulau Li Hua here on Sunday.
Datuk Amar Fadillah also expressed his readiness to bring the proposed development to the attention of the state government through the relevant channels.
In the meantime, he described the MBOR recognition as a challenge to organisers and both the state and Federal governments to sustain and further enhance the standards of organisation in the future.
Earlier, he allocated RM300,000 to support the event and thanked all parties for their cooperation in ensuring smooth operations and safety throughout the programme.
Meanwhile, Team Catamaran from Brunei emerged as champion in the Formula 3 (SST60) category, followed by Meligai Warrior from Kapit in second place, Machan from Kanowit in third place and Eighty Ninety from Brunei in fourth place. -UKASnews
