KUCHING: Jalan Ong Tiang Swee is expected to be expanded through road widening, as it is among the most important roads with surrounding complexes and buildings housing various organisations.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg agreed to Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas’ request in his welcome speech as the road is unable to sustain the rapid development around it.
"In the past, this road was considered big and one of the most important roads but now this road is getting narrower.
"Datuk Amar Douglas has asked for this road to be expanded but he is the Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, so it is up to him.
"That's what surprised me when I heard this request, but maybe he wants an allocation, so Datuk Amar Douglas, it's up to you to implement it, we'll find the money for you later," he said.
He said this when speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) Complex at Jalan Ong Tiang Swee, here, on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Sarawak Premier also approved a multi-storey car park for the UNIFOR Building which was also requested by Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah to curb the issue of parking on the road.
He also spoke light-heartedly to Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah on not requesting the construction of an overly sophisticated car park that utilises automatic systems.
"Nowadays, more car parks use elevators where after going up using the elevator, the vehicle will find a parking space on its own.
"It is also automatic without a driver and the automation system will find a parking space on its own.
"But don't ask for something like that because there are no funds to build such a parking lot but for a normal parking lot, it is okay," he said.
At the culmination of the ceremony, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari also announced an allocation of RM 1 million from Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) to the UNIFOR Charitable Trust Board.
He also witnessed the presentation of the Green Building Index (GBI) certificate for the UNIFOR Complex which was built with the use of natural light, energy-efficient electrical equipment and natural ventilation.
Also present were Sarawak Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department Dato Sri John Sikie Tayai, Deputy Ministers, UNIFOR Director Dato Georgina Apphia Ngau, religious leaders, heads of departments and other dignitaries. -UKASnews
