KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak remains committed to positioning itself as a regional leader in energy transition, leveraging its abundant renewable resources for clean energy generation.
Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the upcoming Baleh Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) in particular will add another 1,285 megawatts (MW) to the state’s generation capacity, in addition to the substantial potential of floating solar at all hydro power stations towards decarbonising and clean energy.
He also highlighted the state’s strategic investment in transmission infrastructure, grid modernisation and existing intensive industries such as aluminium, silicon, ferro alloy zone at Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) powered by clean energy, with Sarawak committed to generating 15 gigawatts (GW) of mostly renewable energy by 2035.
“Sarawak has a broader ambition to establish itself as ASEAN's key energy supplier, such as through the interconnection to West Kalimantan and commencement of 50MW supply of electricity to Sabah.
“Within the ASEAN Power Grid vision, Sarawak is uniquely positioned to act as a major clean power exporter,” he said.
He said this during the second day of The R.A.C.E to Zero Summit & Exhibition 2026, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
The two-day event which began on Tuesday was organised by the Malaysian Photovoltaic & Sustainable Energy Industry Association (MPSEA) and The C0_Lab, with support from the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA).
The summit brought together over 3,000 attendees and over 80 speakers from more than 10 countries as a regional platform for policy, investment, and market discussions on accelerating ASEAN's clean energy transition. -UKASnews
