Longhouse Fire Preparedness Strengthened Through Volunteer Firefighters
TANJUNG MANIS: Longhouse communities in rural areas continue to be empowered through the establishment and training of Volunteer Firefighter Teams as a measure to enhance preparedness against fire risks.
Tanjong Manis Member of Parliament, Dato Ir Yusuf Abd Wahab, stated that the threat of fire cannot be taken lightly as it can occur at any time, particularly due to short circuits or negligence.
He noted that several previous incidents which destroyed parts of longhouses serve as a clear reminder of the importance of early preventive measures and preparedness among residents.
“Volunteer firefighter teams must be trained periodically to ensure they are skilled in using equipment and understand safety aspects when facing emergencies,” he said.
He said this while officiating the handover ceremony of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and the symbolic ground-breaking for the Stalon Volunteer Firefighter Team Operations Room at the Kampung Stalon Longhouse on Friday.
Dato Yusuf informed that an operations room will be constructed to house basic firefighting equipment such as water pumps, hoses, and fire extinguishers to expedite emergency response.
He also reminded residents to always pay attention to safety aspects in their homes, including ensuring electrical wiring is in good condition and avoiding open burning, especially during the dry season.-UKASnews
