SARIKEI: The Sarawak Government's initiative in funding tertiary education is described as a strategic step in developing quality human capital and ensuring that the younger generation remains competitive.
Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said that the initiative enables more Sarawakians to continue their studies at university and higher learning institutions.
According to him, although it is often considered free education, the cost of the studies is borne entirely by the state government to ease the burden on the people.
“Investment in education is among the government’s priorities because it is an essential foundation for the state’s long-term development.
“Education will produce a knowledgeable and highly skilled generation to develop the community and the state,” he said.
He said this when attending the closing ceremony of the 2026 ‘Randau Komuniti’ Programme organised by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) Sarikei Division at the Kampung Selalang Community Hall on Sunday.
Datuk Len added that the initiative also opens up more opportunities for local students to obtain better jobs in the future.
According to him, efforts to strengthen education are in line with the state government’s emphasis on not only infrastructure development, but also human capital development.
The Kuala Rajang Assemblyman said that education should be seen as a long-term investment that will determine the direction of Sarawak’s progress.
At the same time, he encouraged parents to continue to support their children to pursue higher education.
He said that awareness among the community on the importance of education should be increased so that the opportunities provided by the government can be fully utilised.
He also explained that continued support from the government and the community can produce a quality generation that can contribute to the state's economic and social development. -UKASnews
