Sarawak Delta Geopark Opens Doors To Global Markets
SARIKEI: The recognition of the Sarawak Delta Geopark provides strategic opportunities for the state to expand the promotion of local products to the international level, thereby contributing to the stimulation of local economic growth.
Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh, stated that the recognition not only enhances the appeal of the tourism sector but also provides added value to the state’s overall economic development.
He stated that although the geopark is centred in Kuching, its spillover benefits are also experienced in other areas including the central region of Sarawak.
“Various local products such as smoked fish, traditional food, seafood products and handicrafts have strong potential to penetrate global markets,” he added.
He made these remarks when attending the closing ceremony of the Randau Komuniti Programme 2026 organised by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) Sarikei Division at the Kampung Selalang Community Hall on Sunday.
He also shared his experience during a promotional programme in Paris, whereas products from Sarawak received an extremely encouraging response, resulting in the stocks brought along being sold out within a short period.
“There is very high demand but the main challenge is ensuring sufficient and continuous supply to meet market needs,” explained the Kuala Rajang Assemblyman.
At the same time, he stressed the need for more systematic and consistent production planning throughout the year to avoid supply imbalances.
He noted that stable product pricing is closely tied to producers’ ability to keep production going consistently rather than depending solely on seasonal cycles.
In this regard, he encouraged local entrepreneurs to increase production capacity and improve product quality to meet international market standards.
He explained that the opportunities arising from the geopark recognition should be fully utilised to increase community income and strengthen the rural economy. -UKASnews
