New CCTV System Enhances Security At Merbau Pelita Recreational Park
MIRI: Efforts to strengthen public safety and community comfort continue to receive attention through the implementation of a high-definition closed-circuit television (CCTV) installation project at Taman Rekreasi Merbau Pelita under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).
The RM50,000 initiative was channelled for the installation of four CCTV units which have now been fully completed, thereby enhancing monitoring and public facility management in the area.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the installation of the system is important following increased usage of the recreational park and basketball court after previous upgrading works were carried out.
He said the CCTV system not only helps prevent crime and vandalism but also strengthens security control and maintains cleanliness in the community area.
“Besides preventing crime and public property damage, this initiative also helps raise awareness on environmental cleanliness, thereby reducing indiscriminate waste disposal and preserving the beauty of the community area,” he said.
He stated this during a site inspection of the RTP project at Merbau Pelita Recreational Park here on Wednesday.
The Piasau Assemblyman added that the installed CCTV system is equipped with high-definition recording and night imaging functions to ensure clear monitoring of the surroundings including date and time display for reference and enforcement purposes.
At the same time, he expressed hope that the recreational park will continue to serve as a leisure hub and a platform to strengthen unity among the local community.
He stated that continuous maintenance and cooperation from the local community are very important to ensure that public facilities are always in good condition and safe for use.
Datuk Sebastian also said efforts are underway to integrate the CCTV system with the Miri City Council CCTV monitoring centre, enabling more effective 24-hour security monitoring.
It is understood that the use of the recreational park, particularly at night has increased following the installation of lighting with the public making use of the facility for recreational activities such as jogging and basketball.
Merbau Pelita Recreational Park is equipped with various facilities including a basketball court, exercise area and a children’s playground.
Previously, several improvement projects were implemented under the RTP involving allocations of RM159,000 in 2017, RM80,000 in 2019 and RM150,000 in 2024, while an allocation of RM50,000 in 2025 was used for the installation of four high-definition CCTV units in the area. -UKASnews
